my name is katarina lily pellan and i’m captain of the dawn rose. i was born in london, but my parents are russian. they moved to london to look for better job prospects. turns out moving to london was a great choice. my father was a doctor and was able to find an easy job working at an apothecary. i learned from him easy ways to cure ailments and set bones, things that i could do on my own if needed but i helped other in school that injured themselves. originally growing up i thought about staying with my family and working at the apothecary, but when i was fifteen my mother died. my father went through a serious depression. his days were consumed by alcohol and the money was dwindling from his addictive habit. i begged him to get his act together, only able to work so long at the apothecary in his place. i had other obligations in my life. i wasn’t sure what to do. i heard that sky pirates made good bounties, usually from stealing but i was desperate for money for me and my family. the ship was hesitant to take me on. one, i was only seventeen and two i was a woman. despite not being on water they were still superstitious. i was running out of things to do when i noticed them moving an injured crew member. he had suffered a severe gash across his chest. i quickly told them that i had knowledge in healing and cures. the man looked at me strangely, but gave me a chance. i tended to the mans wound, disinfecting it and stitching it up with ease. the men around me watched with fascination and disbelief. the captain decided to hire me on as the medic only if i would teach him ways to heal. in return i asked that he teach me how to defend myself. for three years i was taught swordplay, how to hand a gun, and run a ship while in return i showed crew members how to mend wounds and clean them. what spoils i received i sent some to my father who i hoped had recovered from the loss of our mother and cleaned himself up. i haven’t heard from him or seen him since i left. for all i know he could be dead. hell, he seemed to die when mother did. i’m twenty two now and my old captain has decided to retire. when i first came he wasn’t unsure about me, but looked after me like a daughter among sons and so he left me his ship. i was captain now. i had seen several faces of the crew come and go, but most knew my face. and now i’m the one in charge of the dawn rose and i don’t plan on stopping the legacy that this ship has formed. |
