The Smythe-Highmores are a sprawling, branching family, with cousins scattered all over Britain. Though thoroughly well-to-do- heaven forbid a scion of the Smythe-Highmore family should go into trade!- Lysander's particular branch of the family was not the wealthiest. George Smythe-Highmore simply did not have a head for business, and many of his investments were injudicious at best. However, Lydia Smythe-Highmore née Featherington kept house with an iron accounts book, and Lysander passed through his youth largely untroubled by such things. His sisters squawked about not being able to afford the latest Paris fashions, but so long as Lysander had a roof over his head and books in front of his eyes, he wouldn't know Mayfair from Tight Street. Lysander's first love was always the love of learning. From the age of three he could often be found in his father's study, patiently sounding out words. He devoured every book he came into contact with, and his parents tactfully decided that perhaps it would be best if he were sent away to school early. His teachers both praised him and despaired of him; though he excelled in his classwork, it was utterly impossible to stem the flow of his questions. The more he learned, the more he wanted to learn. At Oxford, while many of his peers spent their time alternately getting drunk and chasing skirts, he absorbed all that he could from his tutors. He was hard pressed to choose just one field to study, when everything under the sun fascinated him. However, as he had a deep curiosity of how things worked, he finally chose to devote himself to the sciences. He has remained in academia ever since, and has taken the post of Professor of Unnatural Sciences at King's College in London. He is becoming quite well known in academic circles- his latest paper on demonology has been lauded for its comprehensive research. His colleagues admit his brilliance when asked, but note that he could use a strong dose of common sense- he has been known to approach the Fallen and openly ask how it is that they fell, to cheerfully stare down demons and ask for measurements, and to generally display no fear whatsoever in the face of intimidating and dangerous beings. |
